WARNING: Confirmed Breaches

Kmart has confirmed unauthorized payment activity due to a data breach at some of its retail stores.

Sears Holdings, Kmart's parent company, announced that payment systems at some of its 735 Kmart retail locations in the U.S. were infected with malware and card data from some in-store transactions were compromised. Personal customer identification data - such as names, addresses, social security numbers or email addresses- was not obtained by the fraudsters in the data breach.

The malware was successfully removed from all Kmart payment systems, but the investigation is ongoing. At this time the corporation is working to identify the number of Kmart locations affected and the timeframe of the compromise event. The investigation indicated no online customers or Sears locations were affected.

As with any card data compromise, please be aware that phishing scams may occur as fraudsters attempt to trick cardholders into providing missing identity or authentication information to facilitate fraudulent transactions.

Debit Card Safety

Please use the following suggestions to keep your debit card as secure as possible:

Never use your PIN number when making purchases. Instead, run the transaction as “credit” and sign for the transaction.

Never keep your pin number with or near the debit card. If your card is compromised and the pin number is with the card, you will be held liable for all transactions.

Look for any parts of the purchase terminals that appear loose or altered. This could indicate the presence of a “skimming” device. “Skimming devices” are used to store the card number, pin number and expiration date of any card that is swiped through that machine. If you believe that a purchase terminal appears altered, immediately notify a manager of the facility and do not use that terminal.
